The outdoor museum at the Henry Ford has historic buildings that he bought and moved such as Edison's laboratory where he invented the light bulb and phonograph and the Wright Brothers' cycle shop. You can get a great dinner in Greektown, go to The Henry Ford in Dearborn-they have a great auto collection. The Institute of Arts has the Rivera Murals. ![]() ![]() Be aware of your surroundings, don't leave things in view when you park and you'll be fine.ĭetroit has many hidden gems to explore. Just use common sense as you would anywhere. I knew people who lived in the suburbs and never set foot inside the city limits but then I knew that they'd never been caught up in the excitement of cheering with the crowd at a baseball or hockey game and never admired the detail of a Seurat painting or stared into the face of Van Gogh. Part of the reason is that walking from your car and getting exercise is simply unthinkable! -) Since Detroit is car-based and has little public transit, most places will have fenced parking nearby. Of course there areas to avoid but if you're interested in seeing the sights such as the Art Institute, Ren Cen, stadiums, casinos or Motown Museum, those are all in good areas and well patrolled. I wouldn't deem it any worse than NYC or Chicago or most other large cities. ![]() I've been away from the city for a few years but still get back regularly.
